TO FOLLOW IS HERSHEY’ REPLY TO MY eMAIL REGARDING LABELING OF GMOs.

THEIR USE OF  SMARTLABEL ALLOWS YOU TO SCAN THEIR BARCODE ON THE PACKAGE TO RECEIVE ALL KINDS OF DATA BUT SINCE I MUST BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE ENTIRE USA THAT DOESN’T HAVE A SMARTYPANTS PHONE, I GUESS I’LL HAVE TO GO BACK TO “JUST LABEL IT” AND ASK THE BEST WAY TO PER SUE DEMANDING THE USDA ESTABLISH A CONSISTENT NATIONAL STANDARD.

Dear Dru,

Thank you for contacting The Hershey Company and for sharing your perspectives on product labeling.  We will certainly forward your comments to the appropriate departments.

As you may know, The Hershey Company began labeling products with GMO ingredients this past spring, consistent with the requirements set by the Vermont state labeling law.  With the new federal GMO labeling law now preempting the Vermont law, it doesn’t make sense to use labels that comply with a law that no longer exists.  We look forward to the USDA establishing a consistent national standard and definition of GMO.  In the meantime, we remain firmly committed to transparency and to providing consumers with the information they want about the foods they purchase and will continue our rollout of SmartLabel™ and our other transparency efforts.

SmartLabel™ allows consumers to easily access far more detail than can ever be included on a package, including the information about GMO ingredients and ingredient sourcing.  Consumer testing showed that there was not much interest in the Vermont-mandated label.  However, for those who have a strong need to get more ingredient information, especially nutritional, allergen and gluten information, they told us that a SmartLabel™ is a valuable tool.

Thanks again, Dru, for taking the time to write and for expressing your concerns.  We always value the feedback we receive from our consumers, so we encourage you to write to us anytime with your comments.

To Whom it May Concern:

I want you to label all your products containing partial or total GMOs in an unambiguous manner and not resort to just using the QR Codes.  I love your products and use consume many of them but at a cost of personal sacrifice myself….if you use the bar codes to label your products; I’m going to stop purchasing them for my personal use.  Dru Turner
